Sitting on the corner, next to a mobile home park, and a retail strip center across the street from City Hall is Carson’s new luxury apartment complex.
The Renaissance is a 150 unit luxury apartment building attached to low income affordable housing and an IHOP restaurant that are all a part of a multi use development named City Center. The new City Center will soon be home to upscale retail tenants and will include a drive through deli, nail salon and a coffee shop. Everyone in Carson is hoping for the success of the new development.
Many Carson residents and outsiders have questioned whether there was a market for this type of luxury housing in Carson. Since its opening last year, nearly all of the apartments have been rented. The rents in the complex range from $1,650 to $2,850 a month.The complex is located at 21800 South Avalon Blvd., and features modern amenities that one would expect to find at an upscale Los Angeles area housing development. You would expect a pool, jacuzzi and lounges, but specialty rooms so you can wash your dogs, play video games, watch movies and practice your yoga. According to John Signo, a senior Carson city planner, the development fills a void because cities and developers have shunned away from new market rate apartment construction for decades, and have built condos and single family homes.
In order to get into the affordable housing developments, tenants must prove their income is low enough. The homes are often reserved for senior citizens on fixed incomes.
Since opening, the apartments have attracted members of the L.A. Galaxy Major League Soccer team and many others who work in or near Carson.
While new upscale rental housing in the South Bay is hard to come by, there have been other recent signs of a resurgence.
A 246 unit luxury apartment complex near County Harbor UCLA Medical Center called Alta South Bay is expected to open next year. The $55 million development near Carson and Torrance, at 22425 South Vermont Ave., will be six stories high and feature resort style amenities including a pool, deck, Internet Cafe and business center. Affordable high end apartments seem to be going up all over the South Bay. In Hawthorne there is a collection of new condominiums called Threesixty at South Bay has been selling luxury condominiums since 2010 at the corner of Aviation and El Segundo boulevards.
Also in Hawthorne, construction is ongoing for 174 homes at Parkside Village development near 120th Street and Van Ness Avenue. A 109 unit condo project near Rosecrans and Chadron Avenues will soon start construction, along with a 72 unit condo project on Imperial Highway near Yukon Avenue.
